In Which Toff Ornelos Gets Some Light Reading In
Permalink

One of life's small and simple pleasures is reading a good book in a cozy room by a roaring fire on a stormy day.

It's not a pleasure that Lord Toff Ornelos gets to indulge very often - and he doesn't expect to get to indulge it much today; if this storm gets much worse, the city's archbanker will magically quell the weather - to protect the shipping.

Toff is resolved to get as much reading in as he can before they do that.

Inclement weather is always uncomfy, and unseasonable storms much moreso. With the Sable Company grounded, she feels blind.

Her wizards say that this storm is no spell, but she has a bad gut feeling about it all the same. It could be some other, less easily perceptible brand of supernatural phenomena.

It'll take ten minutes to calm the weather, and then she'll relax and laugh about her silly paranoia.

But a lot can happen in ten minutes, so she has all the on-call reporting in and her people on high alert.

The storm develops over the course of five minutes.

Tall waves lash against the cliffs of the Heights district. It's bad weather to be out sailing in.

Conquerer's Bay isn't Golarion's best natural harbor, but it is any harbor at all.

There should not be waves that tall crashing against Korvosan cliffs.

She sends a guardsman to get Toff Ornelos; she needs his Limited Wish to control the wind, she wants hippogriffs in the air yesterday.

Combat buffs and battle stations!

I'm going to make you feel ridiculous when this turns out to have just been a fairly bad storm fairly late in the year, both of which ever happen.

But sure, I'll stand on the Heights with you in the driving rain and cast my mighty spells and squint with you and all your assembled wizards and warriors at the turbulent sea.

You blink, it's up there with them.

Immense ill-proportioned teetering swaying graceful and impossibly fast.

Its four eyes glow with a light that pierces the rain.
